Here is Part 4 of some amazing, surprising, and simply bizarre medical trivia, courtesy of Guinness World Records. • The longest amount
of time a patient had to wait on a stretcher was
77 hours and 30 minutes. Tony Collins of the UK
came to the hospital with a viral infection, and
stayed stuck outside of the washroom of Swindon's
Princess Margaret Hospital for four days. Despite
the ordeal, Collins returned to the hospital the
day after his release to thank his nurses and give
them a microwave oven. Ironically, Collins had to be hospitalized again while Guinness World Records evaluated his claim, and was left on a stretcher for another 60 hours! • Garry Turner of England
holds the world record for the stretchiest skin.
In 1999, he stretched the skin of his stomach to
a distended length of 15.8 centimeters (6.25 inches)
on the set of Guinness
World Records: Primetime in Los Angeles.
Turner has a rare medical condition called Ehlers-Danlos
Syndrome, which causes collagen to become
defective, and leads to a loosening of the skin,
hypermobility of the joints, and other problems.
• The youngest person
to wear dentures is Alexander Stone of Kentucky,
who was fitted with a set at the age of four years
and 301 days. The boy suffers from dentinogenesis
imperfecta, a hereditary condition that weakens
the teeth.
• The longest sneezing
bout lasted 978 days. Twelve-year-old Donna Griffiths
of the UK started sneezing about once a minute
on January 13, 1981, and did not achieve her first
sneeze-free day until September 16, 1983.
• Think that's bad? Well,
the longest attack of the hiccups lasted a full
68 years! Charles Osborne (1894–1991) of
the USA began hiccuping in 1922, and was unable
to stop until February 1990. Osborne hiccupped
up to 40 times a minute during the first few decades,
and slowed down to 20 hiccups a minute in later
years. During that time, he led a normal life,
married twice, and fathered eight children. It
is estimated that he hiccuped about 430 million
times during his life. * * * * * Check back for the other three parts in our Guinness World Records series: Discuss This ArticleHave something you'd like to say? Tell us what you think!
