On October 12, 2006, the World Health Organization issued a press release concerning the UN Secretary General's new Study on Violence Against Children. Some facts from the press release and report: • The WHO estimates that,
in 2002, 53,000 children aged 0-17 died as a result
of homicide.
• Studies from many countries
in all regions of the world suggest that up to 80%-98%
of children experience physical punishment in their
homes, with one-third or more experiencing severe
physical punishment resulting from the use of implements.
• The WHO estimates that
150 million girls and 73 million boys under age 18
experienced forced sexual intercourse or other forms
of sexual violence in 2002.
• In 2004, 218 million
children were involved in child labor, and of these,
126 million were in hazardous work. Also 5.7 million
children were in forced or bonded labor, 1.8 million
in prostitution and pornography, and 1.2 million
were victims of trafficking in 2000. (The good news
is that compared to 2002, the incidence of child
labor has dropped 11%, with 25% fewer kids found
working in hazardous occupations.)
• In 16 developing countries
reviewed by a Global School-Based Health Survey,
the percentage of school-aged children that reported
having been verbally or physically bullied at school
in the previous 30 days ranged from 20% in some countries
to as much as 65% in others.
• Children in detention
are frequently subjected to violence by staff, including
violence used as a form of control or punishment,
often for minor infractions. In 77 countries, corporal
and other violent punishments are accepted as legal
disciplinary measures in penal institutions.
• Each year, between 133
million and 275 million children worldwide are estimated
to be witnesses to domestic violence. Discuss This ArticleHave something you'd like to say? Tell us what you think! Read and post comments for this article. Like this article? Read more!
