A healthy, happy employee is a productive employee. With this in mind, take advantage of the on-site programs offered by many hospitals to nourish your body, mind, and spirit. * * * * * Body• Massage therapy is becoming
a popular workplace treat. Some hospitals hire a
masseuse to give staff free 15-minute seated massages.
The massage recipient sits fully-clothed on a specialized
chair, which allows the masseuse full access to his
or her tense neck, shoulders, and back. (I can personally
testify that a quick massage in the middle of a busy
day does wonders!) Some employers also offer health
benefit plans that include massage therapy as a deductible
expense.
• In Canada, most provinces
offer free flu vaccinations, and many hospitals provide
quick and easy vaccinations for staff members. Next
flu season, get vaccinated to protect yourself and
your patients.
• Many large hospitals
offer lunch-hour fitness classes: aerobics, yoga,
meditation, and bellydancing are just a few of the
classes I've seen offered. Advantages include discounted
class rates, eliminating commuting time, small class
sizes, and the chance to sweat alongside familiar
faces! Mind• Free educational talks
and seminars are a frequent occurrence in hospitals.
Topics may range from motivational seminars to the
latest research findings, so next time you see an
interesting topic advertised, why not enrich your
mind and enjoy a free lunch?
• Are you considering further
training in your field or pursuing a graduate degree
part-time? Check if your employer will subsidize
your education. Spirit• Working in the medical
field can be very emotionally taxing. If you're encountering
difficulties that can't be resolved with the support
of friends and family alone, check to see if your
occupational health department offers counseling
services or referrals.
• Having serious problems
with a boss or coworker? Most hospitals have conflict
resolution specialists who are trained to handle
the matter in an impartial manner, and can offer
everything from a sympathetic ear to legal advice. * * * * * A major source of frustration for wellness program coordinators and the employees they serve is that many staff members are completely unaware of the programs provided by their workplace. Classes often need a minimum number of participants to justify continuing, and massages and other perks are usually offered on a first-come, first-served basis, so check your hospital intranet, newsletter, or the occupational health office to avoid missing out.
