DEPARTMENT: Division of ResearchSCHEDULE: Part-time, 20 hours per week, Evening / Day shift; Monday 4:00pm to 8:00pm, Thursday &Friday 10:00am to 6:00pm or 7:00pm (Occasional Saturday and evenings to phone patients)NOTE: This position is expected to continue for 2 years work or pending continuation of grant/contract funding.EDUCATION/LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: Bachelor“s Degree in Nursing or higher. Current California Registered Nurse license required.JOB SUMMARY: The CHOICES Study is a telephone-based educational intervention to increase patient understanding about clinical trials as a treatment option and increase enrollment in clinical trials. We are currently seeking a bilingual research nurse to join our collaborative study team.QUALIFICATIONS:- Bilingual (English/Spanish) required.- Minimum of two years recent experience as a nurse in an educational environment. Previous research experience and experience in patient education preferred.- Recent experience in oncology preferred- Previous experience in phone counseling preferred.- Must be sensitive to emotional states of newly diagnosed patients- Must be able to make accurate assessments of patient health literacy and tailor educational phone call appropriately.- Experience with Kaiser Permanente data systems highly desirable.- Proficiency in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint) required.- Must demonstrate excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.- Must be able to work successfully with a wide variety of internal and external project staff and study participants.- Must be able to manage multiple priorities and meet goals under stringent time deadlines.- Must be punctual, detail-oriented, and follow detailed protocols precisely.- Must exhibit a professional manner with a high degree of courtesy, tact, and sensitivity.- Must be able to work independently in a clinical environment with support from the Principal Investigator, Project Manager, Clinic Coordinator, and Assistant Clinic Coordinator.DUTIES: The Nurse Educator is responsible for the implementation of a tailored telephone counseling protocol, documentation, data collection, and evaluation of study research subjects. This involves interviewing, preparing and educating patients for their visit with their oncologist. The Nurse Educator will also complete study follow up activities according to the Protocol. The Nurse Educator screens the medical records of cancer patients to confirm their eligibility to participate in multiple ongoing cooperative group adjuvant clinical trials for various cancers including breast, colon, lung, brain, and lymphoma. Following a tailored telephone counseling protocol, the Nurse Educator will then recruit eligible patients to participate in the CHOICES intervention study. The protocol includes obtaining verbal consent assessing patient understanding about and interest in clinical trials, and providing educational messages tailored according to patient health literacy and language. The Nurse educator will describe the clinical trials process and answer any questions patients may have. The intervention focuses on increasing patient awareness about the opportunity to participate in a clinical trial as a possible treatment option as well as providing needed information and skills to enable patients to have a productive discussion about clinical trials with their oncologist.
