The Department of Biomedical Research at the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Delaware is seeking a full-time Research Assistant to work in the Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory for the detection of genetic alterations in patients affected with neuromuscular disorders and other diseases affecting children.Responsible for interpretation and reporting of diagnostic test results; maintenance of patient sample database, and tracking and requesting payment for all purchased services regarding this testing. In relation to the Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory, the Research Assistant II also assists in the performance of experiments using a range of techniques including tissue and cell culture, and molecular, and biochemical analysis, as well as actively participate in all laboratory meetings and lab related functions.The Research Assistant II primary function is within the Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory. The individual will perform diagnostic tests for the detection of genetic alterations in patients affected with neuromuscular disorders and other diseases affecting children, and be responsible for interpretation and reporting of diagnostic test results; maintenance of patient sample database, and tracking and requesting payment for all purchased services regarding this testing. They will also assist in the performance of experiments using a range of techniques including tissue and cell culture, and molecular, and biochemical analysis. The Research Assistant II will actively participate in all laboratory meetings and lab related functions.Responsible for participation in departmental and hospital programs for Quality Assessment and Improvement, identifying opportunities to improve services, making recommendations and implementing actions as appropriate and consistent with the goals of the Nemours Foundation.1. Perform diagnostic tests in the Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory.2. Interpret diagnostic test results.3. Perform experiments using a range of molecular biological, biochemical and cell biological techniques under the direction of the Laboratory Head and/or Assistant Director of the Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory.4. Assist with maintenance and operations in the laboratory in which these tests occur. 5. Track and request payment for all purchased services regarding this testing.6. Data analysis and the production of oral and written reports.7. Participation in team meetings at which the work will be discussed and planned.8. Participation in collaborative projects with the Musculoskeletal Inherited Disease Lab.9. Setup and maintain databases for diagnostic testing and results.10. Comply with safety policies specified by departmental and hospital regulations to ensure a safe work environment and prevent potential safety hazards.JOB REQUIREMENTS: The position requires a Bachelors degree in biology, biochemistry or related field.
