You can’t escape being sensitive to the needs of different cultures, races, and languages in the healthcare field, especially in a country as culturally diverse as the United States. Radiological Technologists particularly face challenges in this area because they have direct and imperative contact with patients. A smooth encounter between patient and technologist can have as much impact as receiving an accurate diagnosis.
But a BS in radiologic sciences may not be necessary, or available
Educators and associations are in agreement that the most radiologic technologists would benefit career-wise by pursuing a baccalaureate degree. But in the United States it remains difficult to find an accredited BS radiology program—and one university system just cancelled the only one in its state.
The team putting together the new board says there are two reasons a certification process is needed. First of all the lack of board certification for optometrists may hinder their ability to be accepted in managed care plans. Secondly, there currently is no certification process for optometrists; to obtain a license, they must graduate from an accredited school and pass a national examination.
