About the Calgary Health Region The Calgary Health Region is the largest fully integrated, publicly-funded health care system in Canada. Serving a population of over one million people, the Region is home to some of the fastest growing communities in the country. The integration of health care services means that all services, such as hospital care, community health and mental health, are coordinated under one continuous system, which ensures that patients receive the right care at the right time in the right place. The Calgary Health Region serves the city of Calgary as well as a constellation of smaller communities. These include the world famous resort communities of Banff, Canmore and Lake Louise, as well as numerous rural communities stretching from the mountains to the prairies. More than 23,000 staff and 2,000 physicians provide services in over 100 locations, including 12 hospitals, two comprehensive health centres, 38 care centres, and a variety of community and continuing care sites. Other services provided by the Region include public health, and long-term health services. The Region is well-known for innovation and accomplishments that are Canadian Firsts: • In Calgary four Emergency
Departments were the first in the country to provide
doctors and nurses with on-line patient lab results.
• The Region unveiled
a 16-slice CT scanner which is the very best available
in the marketplace with serial number 0001.
• We created the largest
integrated electronic diagnostic system in Canada
with access to medical images with the click of
a mouse.
• Our Ward of the 21st
Century set a benchmark for medical wards across
Canada.
• New hope is now available
for cancer patients with the announcement of Novalis
Shaped Beam Surgery, which is surgery without scalpels
for tumors in the brain, spine, liver and lung.
• For the first time
in North America, operating rooms in three hospitals
in the same city became linked. i-suites allow
surgeons to consult with colleagues during operations.
