About Southwestern Vermont Medical Center Southwestern Vermont Medical Center (SVMC) is a 99-bed community hospital in Bennington, Vt. It provides a broad range of outpatient and inpatient services to the residents of Southwestern Vermont and neighboring communities in Massachusetts and New York. It opened in 1918. Magnet Hospital for Nursing Excellence SVMC was the first hospital in Vermont and third in New England to earn Magnet recognition for nursing excellence from the American Nurses Association. The association reports that independently sponsored research shows that Magnet-designated facilities consistently outperform non-magnet organizations, delivering better patient outcomes. The improved outcomes include shorter lengths of stay, lower mortality rates, and increased patient satisfaction rates.
