Consistently rated a leading health system in Canada
by the Canadian Institute of Health Information (CIHI),
Capital Health is Canada's largest academic health
region and the leading medical and health sciences
center for Western Canada. As one of Alberta's nine
regional health authorities Capital Health is one
of the province's largest employers with approximately
29,000 employees. Capital Health is an integrated
care model with emergency and acute care hospitals,
specialized services, community health centres and
clinics, and public health programs. The Capital
Health Link, operating 24 hours per day, seven days
a week, is a telephone health advice call centre
staffed by registered nurses to assist the general
public. We offer continuing, respite, and palliative
care services as well as educational, prevention,
and rehab programs. We operate 22 public health centres,
4 specialty clinics, and 9 community mental health
clinics. Additional services are contracted in areas
such as community care and physiotherapy, surgical
clinics, lab services, and home care. Capital
Health is home to Canada's busiest heart and lung
transplant centre, western Canada's only pediatric
liver transplant centre, and is western Canada's
prairie referral centre for cardiac care. The planned
Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute (target completion
2007) will place Edmonton firmly on the map as a
cardiac centre of excellence. As home to the latest
technologies and world-class facilities, we maintain
a strong focus on education, training, and world-renowned
research. Strategic partnerships with the University
of Alberta and other post-secondary institutions
strengthen the education and training of health professionals,
and the recruitment and support of leading researchers.

beds), Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital (240 beds),
the Northeast Community Health Centre, Alberta Hospital
Edmonton (410 beds), Devon General Hospital (21 beds),
and the Fort Saskatchewan Health Centre (32 beds),
Evansburg, Redwater and Westview Health Centres.
New technologies are transforming the health system
by improving patient care, advancing new treatments,
and offering better health management tools. netCARE,
Capital Health's Electronic Health Record, stores
patient information in a secure environment and allows
caregivers in hospitals, public health centres, physicians'
offices and other facilities to work together to
provide the best care. In 2004/5, the Capital Health
Link received 416,600 calls. Our hospitals handled
427,000 emergency visits, 112,000 hospital admissions,
90,000 surgeries, and 13,530 births. Each month,
we provide over 215,000 hours of home care service
