A New Era in Health Care for Eastern Ontario

New organization, new vision
With more than 100 years experience in the area of acute and complex continuing health care services, the former Cornwall General Hospital and the former Hotel Dieu Hospital have combined their vision in order to provide better care to residents of Eastern Ontario.
On January 1, 2004, Cornwall Community Hospital assumed the ownership and operation of the two Cornwall acute care hospitals. Patients will benefit from this new complementary vision and the provision of integrated health care services. The new Cornwall Community Hospital offers a full continuum of services, from ambulatory to acute, to complex, long term and rehabilitation care, as well as palliative care services.

New times, new opportunities
The Ontario Health Care Restructuring Commission directed the amalgamation of both institutions to reduce service duplication, and improve costs efficiencies.
This radical change in the delivery of services creates significant opportunities in these areas:
- quality of care provided
- creation of an integrated and comprehensive health care system
- cost efficiencies in delivery of excellent health care programs, and
- enhancing the quality of life of all residents in Eastern Ontario.

New response, new strategy

The Hospital is now in the development stage of its functional plan, hiring the architects and consultants that will be assisting in defining the entire project.
Vital initiatives to be undertaken as soon as possible include:
- Building a fully-integrated Emergency Ward at the Hospital?s McConnell Street site
- Expanding and renovating the operating rooms
- Building of a new facility to accommodate a new CT Scan
- Expanding and renovating the Maternity Ward and Birthing Rooms
- Renovating existing infrastructure at both sites.
