Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA)

The Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA) works with five geographic health authorities, and is a leader in planning, managing and evaluating solutions that improve the health of British Columbians. Several province-wide health care services and agencies combine their expertise to help PHSA achieve its goals.

One of these agencies, The BC Cancer Agency (BCCA) is committed to our mission of improving the quality of life for people with cancer. Their cancer control program includes research, education, care and treatment, to bring care closer to home for those who do not live in urban centres.

One of PHSA's more widely known entities is BC Children's Hospital (BCCH), which cares for the province's most acutely ill or injured children and youth with a broad range of developmental and rehabilitation services, and specialized health programs. BCCH is a leading acute care teaching facility that works in conjunction with the BC Research Institute for Children's & Women's Health.

BC Women's Hospital & Health Centre (BCW) is the largest maternity facility in Canada, with over 7,000 births annually. In conjunction with the BC Children's Hospital, BCW provides the highest level of care to pregnant women and newborns, and includes programs such as women's health.

PHSA also recognizes that improving mental health with province-wide solutions will aid in British Columbians taking the next step toward healthier lives. Riverview Hospital (RVH) provides delivery of highly specialized mental health services to the most challenging mentally ill patients in the province through the Adult Tertiary, Neuropsychiatry and Geriatric Psychiatry programs. A new decentralized model for tertiary mental health services will support ongoing initiatives by RVH.

Continuing the commitment of PHSA to mental health, The Forensic Psychiatric Services Commission (FPSC) is a world leader in providing unified provincial forensic psychiatric services through its unique, multi-site health organization. It provides specialized hospital and community-based services for adults with mental illness who are in conflict with the law.

PHSA furthers its commitment to innovation in technology and best practices in patient care through a number of partnerships with province-wide leaders. As the only integrated delivery system for organ transplant services in North America, the BC Transplant (BCT) is a leading comprehensive health care organization responsible for outreach programs and all aspects of organ transplantation in British Columbia.

The mandate of the BC Provincial Renal Agency (BCRA) is to plan and coordinate the care of patients with kidney disease along with partnerships with renal care professionals, members of health authorities, the Kidney Foundation, and the University of British Columbia.

Our commitment lends itself to a variety of different disciplines providing a broad scope of services. One of these paramount agencies, The BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) provides provincial and national leadership in public health through surveillance, detection, prevention and consultation, and provides both direct diagnostic and treatment services to people with disease of public health importance.

Furthermore, the Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children (SHHC) is a leading provincial facility offering specialized services to children and youth with developmental disabilities, with a focus on the child and their family. They offer a wide range of consultation, diagnosis, and treatment within the scope of pediatric rehabilitation.
