South Shore Health is one of nine health districts in Nova Scotia created in January 2001 to oversee the delivery of health services in the province. Replacing Regional Boards, District Authorities were designed to give communities a stronger voice to improve local health care and bring decision-making closer to home. South Shore Health is governed by a volunteer Board with 12 voting members. South Shore Health provides community and hospital-based services to the more than 60,000 residents of Lunenburg and Queens Counties, as well as residents of neighbouring communities in Shelburne, Annapolis and Kings counties. Continuing Care Services (Home Care, Long-Term Care and Adult Protection) are expected soon to be integrated with South Shore Health. More than 800 employees and 90 medical staff work within the organization to provide quality health care.
