Hello,
The last week of April celebrates Administrative Professionals Week, where our office secretaries, clerks, assistants to managers, etc. are formally appreciated. Don’t forget to make these professionals in your office feel valued and cherished.
Have you considered the possibility of working as a part-time physician? If this option is right for you, you could be on your way to joining more than 25% of pediatricians, 20% of psychiatrists and family doctors, 18% of obstetricians/gynecologists, and 16% of internists who have worked part-time at some point in their careers.
How will technological advancements effect tomorrow’s medical laboratory technologists (MLTs)? Bernadette Seward explores this advancing trend and examines the impact it could have on MLTs job descriptions, education requirements and more in Lab Techs of Tomorrow.
The ever-increasing demand for medical spa services is a perfect reason to consider a business opportunity with Solana Medspa, the industry’s pioneer in creating facilities that offer non-invasive anti-aging and skin rejuvenation procedures.
As always we appreciate your feedback. To submit your comments or questions, please e-mail info@healthecareers.com.

Part-Time Physicians
By Sheng Wang
Are you looking for an alternative to the 40 to 60 hour workweek? Part-time doctors make up a small but increasing percentage of the physician workforce. According to information from the US Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics, 8% of all physicians and surgeons worked part-time in 2006. Part-time work is more common in specialties with a high proportion of female physicians, such as pediatrics, family medicine, and obstetrics/gynecology. Information from 2005 from the American Medical Association shows that more than 25% of pediatricians have worked part-time at some point in their careers. Among other specialties, more than 20% of psychiatrists and family doctors, 18% of obstetricians/gynecologists, and 16% of internists report working part-time at some point in their career.

Lab Techs of Tomorrow
By Bernadette Seward
What can medical laboratory technologists (MLTs) do today to prepare for the laboratory of the future? Opinions vary. The National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) recently produced a white paper on the subject, entitled The Laboratory Professional of the Future. It suggests that upcoming technological advances will make existing job descriptions for technologists obsolete. It also predicts that educational requirements for entering the profession, and the lifelong learning requirements for remaining relevant in it, will change in response to advances in noninvasive testing, community and home testing, and point-of-care testing.

Dear Cindy:
A former employee is poaching my staff by offering them jobs at her new hospital. I've even caught someone on my unit talking to her on the phone. I'm just wondering what can be done about this situation. I don't want to be difficult with my own employees (i.e., tell them they can't talk to her), because I'm afraid that might have the opposite effect. What should I do?
Sincerely,
Cease & Desist!
