The Grocer's Son (in French with subtitles)

Introduced by Maggie Flinn Department of French & Unit for Cinema Studies, University of Illinois

To whet your appetite for the upcoming Tourn‚es French Film Festival, coming to Boardman's Art Theatre, October 31 - November 6, 2008, The Urbana Free Library is showing this smile-inducing film about a young man forced to leave the big city and return to his country village in Provence when his father falls ill. Initially unhappy, Antoine, driving the family grocery cart from hamlet to hamlet, gradually finds his feelings about the countryside, life, and love begin to change. This surprise French box-office hit is a coming-of-age tale, familiar perhaps, but told with great charm and affection against a glorious Proven‡al backdrop.
