Due to deteriorating
conditions expected from the arrival of Tropical Storm Hanna,
all Anne Arundel County Public Schools activities scheduled for
school buildings and on school property on Saturday, September
6, 2008, are postponed. Activities sponsored by community,
civic, and church organizations that are scheduled to be held in
AACPS facilities or on AACPS property may proceed upon the
mutual consent of the organizing group and AACPS officials.
Those wishing to see whether such events are still being held
should check with the organizing group. Unless further
conditions dictate otherwise, the outreach effort by the Office
of School and Family Partnerships scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2
p.m. at Marley Station mall will go on as planned.
All
events scheduled for Friday, September 5, 2008, will be held as
scheduled.
PROPOSED MIDDLE SCHOOL SCHEDULE WILL MOVE STUDENTS TO SIX-PERIOD
DAY
As part of a proposal by schools Superintendent Dr. Kevin M.
Maxwell, the middle school instructional schedule will move from the current four-period day to a six-period day beginning in the 2009-2010 school year.
Under the plan, middle school students would take Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies classes on a daily basis, all year long. Encore courses would be differentiated by grade level. Sixth-grade students would take four nine-week Encore courses (Technology Education, Art, Family and Consumer Sciences, and World Language Connections) and three other yearlong electives, including physical education. Students in seventh and eighth grades would have more flexibility in their Encore course selections.
