Prior Learning Assessment for
Internationally Trained Medical Laboratory Technologists
Two ways to be eligible to challenge the CSMLS' National Certification Examinations:
1-
Graduate from a CMA* accredited MLT educational program. All diploma requirements must be complete before the examination. *Accredited by Conjoint Accreditation Services, Canadian Medical Association
or
2 -
“Equivalent” prior learning assessment.
As an internationally educated medical laboratory technologist (IEMLT), you have the opportunity to establish your eligibility to the CSMLS National Certification Examinations through the prior learning assessment process.
The prior learning assessment (PLA) process evaluates your academic credentials, experiential (practical) learning, professional development and work history to determine your equivalency to the national competency profile, which is the standard for Canada.
There are two main stages of the prior learning assessment process: pre-assessment and post-assessment. Each stage has multiple steps to complete.

Pre-assessment (before the assessment): From the time when a client applies for PLA with the CSMLS to when all the required documents have been received.
2-
Post-assessment (after the assessment): From the time when the PLA file is forwarded to the assessment team for review and the PLA report is composed and issued.
