EVMS leaders describe vision for school's
future — Eastern Virginia Medical School
President Harry T. Lester and Dean Gerald J.
Pepe, Ph.D., outlined the school's remarkable
progress over its first 35 years and their
vision for the years ahead during the 2008 State
of the School Address on Wednesday.
President Lester highlighted the impact of the
school's strengthened relationship with the
Commonwealth of Virginia and community partners,
and Dean Pepe touted the ever-strengthening
faculty of clinicians and researchers who
vigorously pursue EVMS' core missions of
teaching, discovering and caring.

13th Britt dinner raises $135,000 for
scholarships —
People from across the region who share a common
goal — to improve health care for all — came
together October 23 for the 13th annual L.D.
Britt, M.D. Scholarship Dinner.
More than 400 individuals and representatives
from dozens of businesses celebrated the
successes of the scholarship program that aims
to aid outstanding minority medical students who
attend Eastern Virginia Medical School.

Health Services physician one of the top for
women in the country — EVMS Health
Services physician Alfred Z. Abuhamad, M.D., has
been singled out by Women's Health Magazine as
one of the country's top physicians for women.
Dr. Abuhamad was one of four obstetrician/
gynecologists in the southern region of the
United States cited by the magazine.
