Carilion Labs’ cytogenetics lab, is an extremely spacious and well equipped full-service laboratory. Our test menu includes conventional and high resolution cytogenetics on a wide range of specimens including: amniocentesis, CVS, peripheral blood, bone marrow and solid tissues. Our FISH services include micro deletion FISH, hematology/oncology interface, FISH, Her2 and bladder cancer FISH.
SIGNIFICANT RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES:
This technician will be performing cytogenetic technical procedures precisely and accurately and will assist the supervisor and medical director with the implementation of new procedures.
The successful applicant must have the ability to operate equipment while sitting and/or standing. Must be flexible and willing to work additional hours or shifts as needed. Must possess effective communication skills with the ability to work efficiently and accurately and under stress.
The technologist may be subjected to viral and bacterial infections, blood borne pathogens or to toxic substances. This individual is responsible for accurate cytogenetic analyses and interpretations and has the ability to culture cells from various tissue types.
The current staff consists of 9 cytogenetic technologists, a laboratory assistant, the laboratory supervisor, a Ph.D. laboratory director and a genetic counseling team.
Work Schedule: Full Time; Monday through Friday; Occasional Weekends.
Qualifications: Baccalaureate degree from a recognized college or university with a strong bio-science background. NCA certification preferred. Require at least one year of clinical cytogenetics laboratory experience. FISH experience a plus.
