TOSCA
JUNE 21st, 2005

Wildwood Artistic Director Ann Chotard returns as stage director for an imaginative production
Tosca set in 1812 New Orleans. Chotard's unique interpretation highlights the cultural, social
and political activity of New Orleans at the time. European singers spent the season there, as
eight opera houses produced world premieres as well as the most popular operas of the day.
Multiple ethnic and political groups were active in forming various coalitions as they attempted to
defeat and expel the British. The social life of the French Quarter was rich and varied, including
not only Anglos, but also the Creoles and mulattos.
The stunning production features Irving Milton Duke's bold set design, with French Quarter grillwork,
and a dramatic, European-style lighting scheme, with shafts of brilliant color. Wildwood favorites
Christine Donohue, George Dyer and Gregory Pearson make their debuts as Tosca, Cavaradossi and
Scarpia, respectively. The orchestra, conducted by Piotr Sulkowski, premieres a new orchestration
by Stefan Kozinski.
Tosca will be sung in English.
