Student nurses from Northwestern State University Leesville-Fort Polk volunteered at the DeRidder Wal-Mart for the SIDS and Safe Sleep Event sponsored by the Department of Health and Hospitals, Region V Office of Public Health, on Saturday, Nov. 15 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. They assisted the Office of Public Health staff to set up displays, register shoppers for prizes, and hand out Safe Sleep Information. Nursing instructor, Wendi Palermo, said, “It was a great opportunity for the NSU Leesville-Fort Polk nursing students to perform a valuable community service and to partner with the Office of Public Health to decrease the incidence of SIDS cases in the NSU region and the state.” Palermo’s nursing students volunteer for this project annually.  Pictured here from left to right are student nurses Laura Davis, Rebecca Kiely, Katie Johnson, Sarie Arthur, and Barbara Davis.

The Leesville Wampus Cats are preparing to face the Zachary Broncos Friday night on the road in a Class 4A regional playoff game. Game time is set for 7 p.m., at Zachary High School.
The Wampus Cat Gridiron Club has chartered a bus that holds 55 people, headed to the playoff game in Zachary. Cost is $40 per person, with the bus departing the LHS Field House at 1:30 p.m. today. The bus is full loaded with a restroom etc. To reserve a seat, call Shawn at Cryer's Sports at 239-2283.

In a joint effort between the City of Leesville and the Vernon Parish School Board new lights have been installed at the municipal tennis courts. High schools throughout the area use the courts for practices and matches, and when it came time for the lights to be replaced, the City of Leesville purchased the new equipment and employees of the VPSB installed the new lights.
