STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

Jackson County Transit is a fully coordinated, public transportation system, and operates as a branch of county government.

Regular services start at 6:00 AM and runs until 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Daily routes criss-cross Dillsboro-Sylva-Webster-Cullowhee areas of the county providing local service. Daily routes also extend from Sylva into Tuckaseigee, Glenville a nd Cashiers. Out of county routes extend into Franklin, Cherokee, and Asheville. Community service routes are run on a weekly basis and include the following:

Daily and weekly scheduled service is provided to the elderly. Schedules include the following: home pick-up and delivery, shopping, medical needs, banking, paying utility bills, recreational activities, the local nutritional program and various Golden A ge Center activities.

Daily and weekly scheduled service is provided to the physically challenged. Three lift-equipped vans are in operation. They are utilized for employment, school attendance, medical, treatment and therapy appointments at Harris Regional, Sylva Dialysis, Regional Cancer Center and the Veteran's and Memorial Mission hospitals in Asheville. Other needs are handled on a demand/response basis.

The youth of Jackson County are provided transportation to and from daycare and Head Start program centers. Other services include: special outings, field trips and library trips.

A lease program is made available to any approved, non-profit organization for either week-ends or off-hour rentals. Vehicles available are, Minivan, 15 passenger standard van, 24, 20 and 16 passenger buses.
