AMHERST, N.Y. — Hasheem Thabeet had 21 points and 18 rebounds, Jeff Adrien added 18 points, and No. 2 Connecticut survived a big scare, holding off Buffalo 66-64 on Thursday night. The Bulls (3-3) nearly upset then-No. 2 Pittsburgh at Alumni Arena two years ago, losing 70-67 after leading by 10 points with 14 minutes left. A repeat performance seemed unlikely against the Huskies (8-0), who won their first seven games by an average of 24 points.

Cut border guards a break

In February 2005, Border Patrol agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean opened fire in Fabens, Texas, on a fleeing drug smuggler they believed was armed. Though wounded, the suspect escaped. Aware of the lack of political and judicial resolve against illegal immigration and drug smuggling, the agents tried to cover up the shooting. They were tried and found guilty on several counts; prosecutors gave the smuggler, Osvaldo Aldrete-Davila, immunity to testify against the agents. Mr. Ramos was sentenced to 11 years in prison; Mr. Compean, 12.

Poor model

Bridgeport, a post-industrial urban wreck teetering on bankruptcy, has adopted a suitable if wildly impractical model for its labor relations: the U.S. auto industry. Over many decades, automakers averted strikes and managed lean years by agreeing to work-rules changes and expanded long-term benefits. Now automakers are begging for help from Congress, having been laid low by onerous labor and retiree obligations that have come due.
