Interim Richmond City School Superintendent Dr. Yvonne Brandon will hold four coffee and tea gatherings Dec. 8 for the public to comment on the district’s proposed 2009-2010 school budget.

| RPS Congratulates Melody Barnes |
Melody Barnes, a 1982 graduate of Richmond Publics Schools, has been appointed to President-elect Barack Obama's economic team as director of the Domestic Policy Council. Barnes, who graduated from the Thomas Jefferson-George Wythe-Huguenot high school complex, served as Obama's domestic policy adviser during his campaign. She received her law degree from the University of Michigan and previously served as executive vice president for policy at the Center for American Progress. Barnes also served as chief counsel to Sen. Edward M. Kennedy.

| Nine students, who participated in the first Presidential debate between John McCain and President Elect Barack Obama in October, gathered over lunch with Interim Superintendent Dr. Yvonne Brandon as a follow-up on important topics discussed during their previous meeting. Among the topics of discussion were those of how to better Richmond Public Schools, as well as ideas of forming a student coalition who'd be willing to go before the Richmond Public School Board and tackle issues collaboratively. |

Richmond City Choir Students Earn All-Region Honors
Several Richmond City high school students have earned All-Region Choir honors. The auditions, held earlier this month at Deep Run High School, featured students from Chesterfield, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico and Richmond City schools.

Stuart Elementary School teacher selected Richmond’s 2009 Teacher of the Year
Frenishee B. Smith, a third-grade teacher at J.E.B. Stuart Elementary School, has been selected Richmond Public Schools’ 2009 Teacher of the Year.
The award was announced Nov. 20 at a special reception that recognized the 50 Richmond City educators who had been nominated for the district’s top teaching honor.

| The Richmond Business Council of the Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce hosted an event at the Jefferson Hotel, a part of their InVision series, to recognize the Richmond Public Schools Top Ten Teachers of the year and highlight the role of partnerships in our schools. The event, sponsored by the Robins Foundation, Altria Group, First Market Bank, Capital Region Airport Commission, provided stipends to the teachers provided by Altria and First Market as well as the released book, Facts and Legends of the Hills of Richmond written by Brooks Smith and photographer Wayne Dementi. |

City Schools Will Hold Application Meeting For IB Middle Years Programme

Richmond Public Schools will hold a meeting for parents and students Dec. 10 at Brown Middle School to discuss the application procedures to attend the district’s International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme for the 2009-2010 school year.

City schools hire procurement manager
Richmond Public Schools has hired Silvester A. Howell to serve as the school district’s procurement manager.
“We are pleased to have Mr. Howell join the district as we continue to re-engineer our procurement procedures for increased efficiency and transparency,” said Superintendent Dr. Yvonne Brandon. “His expertise and background experience working in the private, public and military sectors will serve him and the district well.”

District-wide “Appreciation Campaign”
As part of the district-wide “Appreciation Campaign”, Richmond Public Schools presented over 1,000 “thank you” cards and 38 care packages to members of the soon-to-be deployed 49th U.S. Army Group based at Fort Lee.
To show their appreciation, the 49th U.S. Army Group presented Franklin Military Academy with a special memento signed: “Franklin Military Academy, Thank-you for supporting our troops…” Among the crowd were relatives and friends of local veterans who represented America in war, and acknowledged were some of those who are currently serving. Richmond Public Schools is grateful for our nation’s heroes who protect our freedom(s) everyday, and would like to wish them all a Happy Veterans Day.

Lashane Johnson invited to 2009 Special Olympics World Games
Lashane Johnson, a student at Richmond's John Marshall High School, has been invited to take part in the 2009 Special Olympics World Games to be held in Boise, Idaho.
Lashane will compete in the speed skating competition. Currently, Lashane is working with Stephanie Floyd at SkateNation located in Short Pump. Floyd and others are donating their time and resources. Teaching beyond the SOLs
There are only three high schools in the region to earn perfect scores of 100 on any of this year's Standards of Learning tests. And all three are Richmond City schools.
According to a recent Richmond Times-Dispatch article, of the 204 grade-level SOL scores recorded by area high schools, there were six perfect 100s. Richmond Community topped the list, earning 100s in English, history and science. Open notched 100s in English and math while Franklin earned a 100 in English. |
City schools’ on-time graduation rate shows double digit gain.
The on-time graduation rate for students attending Richmond Public Schools has jumped by 10 percent in the last year, according to a recent report released by the Virginia Department of Education.
The latest data for students in the 2004-2008 cohort indicate that nearly 65 percent of Richmond’s students graduated on time. The figure represents a 10 percent increase from the 2003-2007 cohort rate of 55 percent.

Richmond’s Open High named Blue Ribbon School by U.S. Dept. of Education
Richmond’s Open High has been named a 2008 No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education. The designation is one of the highest honors a school can receive from the federal government. Read more. |
