Welcome to the Rideau Canal World Heritage Site

Canadian Heritage RiverThe Rideau Canal Waterway is a boater's paradise, attracting pleasure boats from across North America to travel its 202 kilometre (125 mile) length. The Rideau Canal; a National Historic Site of Canada, a Canadian Heritage River and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, consists of a series of beautiful lakes and rivers connected by canals. It stretches from Kingston, at the foot of Lake Ontario, to Ottawa, Canada's capital. Maintained by Canada's Parks service it is arguably the most scenic waterway in North America. Whether you visit by boat, car, bicycle or on foot, the Rideau has something for you.

Boat leaving Davis Lock
The Rideau Canal Waterway, which links the lakes and rivers between Ottawa and Kingston, is the oldest continuously operated canal in North America. The locks are operated today much as they were when first opened in 1832. Each lock is unique and the lock staff are always ready to offer the tourist any assistance they can. Most locks provide washrooms, overnight mooring and picnic facilities, including tables, benches and barbecue grills.

You can visit the Rideau in a number of ways. A boat is of course best to get the full ambiance of the region. You can pilot your own boat to the Rideau, trailer it here, or rent a boat on-site. Many people also enjoy the Rideau by staying at an Inn, Bed & Breakfast, Lodge, or cabin. The Rideau also makes for a wonderful driving trip, with many scenic roads winding their way through the heart of Old Ontario. So, whatever your vacation preference, the Rideau Canal Waterway has something for you. Follow the links below for more details:

MY BOOKS
A History of the Rideau LockstationsEngineered LandscapesRideau RouteI've written three books about the Rideau Canal. A History of the Rideau Lockstations, all about the construction of the Rideau Canal, was first published in 2000. Engineered Landscapes, a research document about the early Rideau surveys, the pre-canal geography, and the flooding of the Rideau by canal dams, was first published in 2006. The Rideau Route: Exploring the Pre-Canal Waterway, a general audience re-write of Part 1 of Engineered Landscapes, was first published in 2007.

For more information have a look at the A History of the Rideau Lockstations book page, the The Rideau Route book page. and the Engineered Landscapes book page.

The Sweeney DiaryIn 2008 I edited "The Sweeney Diary: The 1839 to 1850 Journal of Rideau Lockmaster Peter Sweeney" as a volunteer project on behalf of Friends of the Rideau. The book includes the fascinating diary of the first lockmaster at Jones Falls. It also includes The Life and Times of Peter Sweeney and Who's Who in the Diary by local historian Sue Warren. Anyone interested in a first hand account of life in Upper Canada, of an early Rideau lockmaster, or just interested in a good read will enjoy this book. It's available for sale through Friends of the Rideau or at some local bookstores.
