An Apprenticeship & Industry Training Program information session will be held Thursday, December 4 at 6:30 pm at Burnaby Central Secondary (gym). These career program options are for all students in grades 11 or 12. Parents and students will have the opportunity to meet and talk with the teachers and students in Burnaby School District's Industry Training Programs. Rodger Hargreaves from the Youth Initiatives Industry Training Authority will be the guest speaker.

Climate Change and Human Rights - a UN Videoconference

On December 5, the United Nations Student Conference on Human Rights and Climate Change will be video-conferenced between 7 am and 1:30 pm at Byrne Creek’s Centre for Dialogue. It provides an opportunity for secondary school students throughout the district to learn about how the rights of the world’s citizens are being affected by the weather variations of climate change. Two district students Kathy Kang of Byrne Creek and Sayanthen Sivanesan of Moscrop are getting an even closer view. They were selected to attend the three day conference in New York.

Welcoming Newcomers to Burnaby

The district’s “Settlement Workers in Schools” (SWIS) program started in the Fall of 2007 to fill a community need. To date more than 2,900 new immigrants have accessed this program to support their immediate settlement needs. The program also provides information on Canada’s education system (K-12 and beyond) and health system as well as family and youth issues.  An additional settlement resource for families has recently been developed by Pacific Employment & Education Resources. It is a comprehensive directory of immigrant and refugee programs, services, and organizations available in the community for Burnaby residents. Access it here.

Inaugural Meeting of the Burnaby Board of Education

The Inaugural meeting of the Burnaby Board of Education will be held on Tuesday, December 9 at 7:30 pm. This meeting will take place at Burnaby City Hall.

Weather Closure Information

On occasion, it may be necessary to close Burnaby public schools for instruction due to inclement weather. If this should happen, an announcement will be posted on the front page of the district website and information provided to local media outlets by 6 am. Please do not call the media outlets, the district office or the school..
