Reports of pharmacy burglaries targeting pseudoephedrine for the apparent purpose of making methamphetamine recently have come to the attention of the Iowa Board of Pharmacy and Iowa law enforcement agencies. In the last few weeks, night-time break-ins in central and east-central Iowa have been reported (Des Moines, Newton, Marengo, Toledo, Traer and Waterloo). With one exception, PSE was stolen. This phenomenon appears to be isolated in only a few areas, but still is cause for concern. As such, pharmacies are urged to take precautions to prevent break-ins. Recommendations include:

Leave lights on in the pharmacy area.
Store PSE products in locked containers.
Install/utilize/publicize security cameras.
Install/utilize/publicize alarm systems.
Increase pharmacist/clerk vigilance for people who might be casing pharmacies.
Talk, in advance, with local law enforcement about theft prevention strategies.
Report suspicious activity to local law enforcement (they have been notified of these incidents).

This is a precautionary notice, and standard procedures should be followed in securing all controlled substances. Please contact the Iowa Board of Pharmacy if you have any questions or need to report the loss of a controlled substance due to theft.

REQUEST FOR PROPOSAL (RFP)

The Board of Pharmacy is soliciting proposals from qualified service providers to provide a database for the collection of Controlled Substance prescription dispensing records and to provide related program support and activities to the Board. Related program support and activities include, but are not limited to, coordinating the transmission of prescription dispensing records by pharmacies to the Iowa Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) and establishing a secure web-based access portal. The PMP will collect prescription records and make that information available to qualified health practitioners via secure web-based access portal. System functionality shall include formatted queries and reports, ad hoc query and report capabilities, and statistical and audit tracking.
