POSITION PURPOSE

The Unit Manager is responsible for the 24-hour coordination and supervision of the unit in a manner which ensures optimal patient care services. This position provides leadership for: clinical excellence; personnel management; fiscal accountability and positive unit relations with other departments, physicians and hospital guests. Participates in patient care and hospital-wide activities to achieve department and organizational goals. All job duties are performed in a manner which demonstrates the KGH values of caring, respect and professional excellence toward patients, families, volunteers, physicians and coworkers.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

1. Education: Graduate of an accredited, State Board of Nursing approved nursing program is required. BSN or bachelor's degree in a related field is preferred. Experience combined with demonstrated ability may be substituted for the degree.

2. Certification: Current registered nurse licensure in the State of Alaska is required.

3. Experience: Must have a minimum of 3 years clinical experience; experience in a variety of acute care clinical settings is preferred. Experience in a supervisory position is preferred or will be oriented to point of competency. Must have the ability to work efficiently and responsibly in an environment with multiple work demands and short time frames. Demonstrates awareness of the importance of age-specific principles of growth and development and life stages in meeting each patient's unique needs for basic nursing care.

4. Interpersonal: The ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with staff, hospital administration, medical staff, volunteers, representatives of the media and community agencies and other clientele is required.

5. Physical: Must have ability to: tolerate long periods of sitting, walking or standing; read computer screen text; communicate verbally with individuals in person or on the telephone; read and write text; solve complex problems; and respond quickly to department or hospital emergencies. Must be able to assist others in moving, lifting and positioning patients. Must be able to read and interpret applicable diagnostic screens and hear and interpret Doppler and stethoscope sounds.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

1. Understands, supports and promotes the organizational values inherent in the philosophy of KGH.

2. Performs job duties in a manner which demonstrates the values inherent in KGH.

3. Cooperates with other departments to accomplish department/hospital objectives.

4. Maintains department records, policies and job descriptions according to department procedures.

5. Operates department within approved expense and capital budgets and within productivity measures (budgeted productive hours).

6. Establishes a minimum of one goal annually that develops improvement in procedures, systems and/or services.

7. Operates department in compliance with JCAHO and/or other regulatory agency requirements.

8. Provides for and administers an effective department safety program.

9. Ensures adequate department equipment, materials and supplies are available.

10. Maintains communication with department employees.

11. Maintains managerial competence.

12. Complies with KGH Human Resource policies and key procedures.

13. Evaluates employee performance; employee performance weaknesses are addressed by timely corrective action.

14. Supervises orientation of new employees.

15. Administers all aspects of staff management and development for OB to ensure staff competency, qualifications and professional growth related to excellence in patient care.

16. Oversees the ongoing Quality Improvement (QI) program which is organized and responsive to employees so that quality patient care is assured.
