Description: West Florida Healthcare is located in Pensacola, FL. With 531 beds, our facility offers a range of comprehensive/specialty healthcare services. We are committed to clinical excellence, innovation, and enhancing the healthcare standards for our community.
The Coder IV oversees the day-to-day functions of the Health Information Management department as it relates to the review of medical records to select, assign, and sequence the appropriate ICD-9-CM and HCPCS CPT coding applications. The individual responsibilities include: Codes/Abstracts all types of Inpatient and Outpatient records. Codes/Abstracts an average of 3 Inpatient records per hour, 6 IRF/PAI discharges, 4 IRF/PAI contractual, 3 Surgical Day Care (SDC), 3 Observation (OBS), 13 Emergency (ED), and 30 Clinical (CLI) records with 95% accuracy. Reviews all appropriate coding resources in order to remain current with knowledge. Meets all education requirements as stated in policy and as required by the CIA. Utilizes both physician and nursing documentation in code assignment. Initiates physician query when appropriate. Responds to various phone requests, record retrieval, filing reports on medical records, and utilization of various software programs within the sub-departments. Performs other duties as assigned.

Education: Prefer undergraduate degree in HIM/HIT program. RHIT/RHIA eligible. Completed coursework in Human Anatomy and Physiology, Medical Terminology and Pathophysiology/Disease Processes.

Experience: Minimum three to five years acute care hospital, rehab and psych inpatient and outpatient coding. Experience in Health Information Management, Medical Records or a Medical Office preferred Knowledge of ICD-9-CM diagnosis required.

Skills: Good organizational, critical thinking, communication skills in a detail-oriented, multi-tasks, customer- focused organization. Computer skills a must with data analysis background and knowledge. Good quantitative and qualitative skills. Able to comprehend and follow written and verbal instructions. Able to type 35 words per minute.
