The Pathologist Assistant functions with general
supervision from the Director of Anatomic Pathology.
Summary of Essential Job Duties: The Pathologist's Assistant is a professional person who is qualified by academic and practical training to provide service in Anatomic Pathology. Responsibilities include dissecting and grossly describing tissue specimens, assisting with and teaching pathology dissection techniques to residents, coordinating teaching conferences and organizing and maintaining teaching materials. Performs surgical specimen dissection by ensuring appropriate specimen accessioning and obtaining representative sections for histologic examination. Submits requests for special histologic procedures and special stains as appropriate. Insures that photographs and x-rays are taken as necessary. Assists with the performance of frozen sections as needed. Assists with the appropriate triaging of specimens to insure that workflow allows for efficient tissue processing resulting in the minimum amount of time necessary to prepare slides for pathologists. Requirements: Baccalaureate Degree in science with background in biological science and a minimum three years experience in pathology. Certification by American Association of Pathologists' Assistants (AAPA) preferred. Strong interpersonal skills for interacting with peers, patients, physicians and other customers of the medical center. Professional involvement in at least one professional association is desirable. Physical Demands: Frequent sitting and standing; occasional walking and bending; occasional lifting of materials up to 25 pounds for distances to 10 feet. Responsiveness to auditory alarms and communication devices including: telephones, beepers, fire alarms, mechanical failure alarms. Visual acuity acceptable for performing duties of this position.
