We now seek: Medical Director - Full Time Yavapai County Jail, Camp Verde, AZ A physician licensed in the state of assignment responsible for providing the overall supervision of medical services at the correctional facility. The Medical Director shall attend patients, provide medical consultations for the medical staff and institutional officials, and provide liaison for clinical matters with medical providers outside the institution. The Medical Director will ensure that all activities of the health care unit are conducted in accordance with standards of medical care delineated by state regulations, NCCHC, AMA, and ACA standards. RESPONSIBLE TO * Corporate Medical Director * Health Services Administrator WORKERS SUPERVISED * All clinical staff. INTER-RELATIONSHIPS * Interrelates and works effectively with patients, patient families as appropriate, dental staff, medical and nursing staff, security staff at all levels, and administrative and support staff (i.e., pharmacy, laboratory and consulting physicians and dentists, etc.). DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Administrative a. The Medical Director shall evaluate all existing medical programs and assess the health care needs of the inmate population, making recommendations regarding medical programs or services as appropriate. b. The Medical Director shall assist in designing and implementing policies, procedures and protocol for health care unit and medical staff. c. The Medical Director shall be responsible for reporting any problems and/or unusual incidents to the Health Services Administrator or designee. d. The Medical Director shall attend staff meetings and participate on various committees as requested by the Health Services Administrator or designee. e. The Medical Director shall represent the health care unit in discussions with local civic groups or visiting officials of the Facility as mutually agreed upon by the parties. f. The Medical Director, or designee, shall assist with evaluations and inspections of conditions in living units, segregation unit, dietary areas and other portions of the facility, review all reports pertaining to sanitation or medical services, and make appropriate recommendations. g. In the event of an emergency as determined by the Facility, the Medical Director shall provide emergency care and referrals to appropriate hospitals and physicians as requested by the Health Services Administrator, the Agency Medical Director or designee, on a fee-for-service basis to the extent the services exceed those required under this contract. 2. Clinical Duties a. The Medical Director should be responsible for: b. Conducting inmate sick call on days and at times authorized by the correctional facility. c. Examining, diagnosing and treating inmates referred to the Medical Director. d. Reviewing and/or monitoring the staff physician review of all laboratory, x-ray and ancillary reports, and ensuring that the review is documented on the inmate's chart. e. Assuring examination and initial emergency medical treatment to all persons who are injured or become ill while on the premises. These persons shall be referred to their physician of choice for necessary follow-up care. f. Providing 24-hour on call emergency care to the correctional facility. g. Performing employment, Worker's Compensation or other physician examinations for the correctional facility when so designated by specific contract agreement. h. Examining employees to assess fitness to perform duties as required by the Health Services Administrator or designee. i. Periodically evaluating dietary personnel to ensure that they satisfy all health requirements applicable to dietary workers. j. Providing minor surgical treatment at the institution as deemed medically appropriate to including suturing for minor lacerations. k. Formulating written individual treatment plans for inmates with medical problems, which include directions to health care and other personnel regarding their roles in the care and supervision of these patients. l. Conducting infirmary rounds, or ensuring that another physician conducts rounds. m. Conducting intake and annual examinations on inmates, as provided for by appropriate procedures, or as dictated by good medical practice. n. Evaluating food handler candidates prior to assignment, and periodically thereafter to ensure compliance with all health regulations. 3. Staff Recruitment and Evaluation. a. The Medical Director shall participate in recruitment of health care staff, as requested by the Health Services Administrator or designee. b. The Medical Director shall supervise and direct the clinical activities of all health care staff, including: i. Supervising infirmary rounds made on patients by other physicians. ii. Reviewing and approving all referrals to outside hospitals or specialists. iii. Evaluating services and treatment provided by other staff physicians, physician's assistants and other health care staff. iv. Properly completing employee evaluations for those employees under the Medical Director's direct supervision, in accordance with applicable Wexford policy. v. Assisting in planning schedules of health care staff to provide optimal coverage, when requested. 4. Quality Assurance a. The Medical Director shall implement and direct the quality assurance program including, but is not limited to, audit and medical chart review procedures. These programs are identified in the Wexford QA manuals. 5. Training and Orientation a. The Medical Director will participate in ensuring that all new health care personnel are provided with orientation on site, at the correctional facility, regarding medical practices. Orientation concerning security and correctional institution operations is the responsibility of the Facility. b. The Medical Director with the Health Services Administrator, will direct the development of the correctional facility's continuing medical education curriculum, and oversee a program providing in-service education and will communicate such to the Corporate HR Department. c. The Medical Director shall participate in ensuring that staff receive training as necessary to ensure proper performance of their medical duties. 6. Referrals to Outside Hospitals or Specialists a. Medical Director will provide verification to the Corporate Medical Director of at least admitting privileges at the hospital. b. The Medical Director shall make referrals and arrangements with medical specialists as needed for treatment of those inmates with health care problems extending beyond the scope of onsite services provided (subject to the security coverage of the facility.) c. The Medical Director shall review the health care status of inmates admitted to outside hospitals to ensure that the duration of the hospitalization is no longer medically indicated. d.
