Independent research in residence at participating
US government laboratories
The National Research Council (NRC) of the National Academies is accepting applications for independent research to be conducted in residence at participating US government laboratories. Sponsoring laboratories include the National Institutes of Health, the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, the US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases, the US Army Institute of Surgical Research, the US Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine, the Armed Forces Research Institute of Medical Sciences, the US Army Medical Research Unit., the US Army Center for Environmental Health Research, the Naval Medical Research Center/Naval Health Research Center, the US Environmental Protection Agency and the Edgewood Chemical and Biological Center. Qualified applicants must hold or expect to receive the Ph.D. or other equivalent earned research doctorate. Applicants design their own research projects to be compatible with the overall interests of the sponsoring laboratory. Awards are available in all areas of science and engineering, including microbiology, microbial pathogenesis, immunology, parasitology, genetics, molecular and cellular biology, molecular virology, microbial ecology, bacteriology, immunology and related disciplines. Each award is for one year with possible renewal for up to three years maximum. Stipends range from $41,000 to $70,000 for recent Ph.D. recipients and are higher for additional experience. Awards also include support for relocation and professional travel, and health insurance. Awards are competitive with annual application deadlines of February 1, May 1, August 1 and November 1.
