Job Details: Nurses -Voluntary Service Overseas

Lifestyles: Four Seasons – Thoreau had it right: “Live each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influences of each.”
Description: VSO (Voluntary Service Overseas) is the world's leading independent, international development organization that works through volunteers to fight poverty in developing countries.

VSO (Voluntary Service Overseas) is the world's leading independent, international development organization that works through volunteers to fight poverty in developing countries. VSO's high impact approach involves bringing people together to share skills, build capabilities, promote international understanding and action, and change lives to make the world a fairer place.

Right now VSO is seeking nursing professionals to volunteer for a year or more in one of our 34 country programs.

Why does VSO need Nurses?

Nurses volunteering with VSO help to improve healthcare service provision in developing countries. Opportunities exist in psychiatric nursing, community healthcare and primary heathcare. The opportunities are varied - You could be doing a combination of clinical nursing, health promotion and informal training with a local counterpart, such as village health workers or nurse's assistants. Placements deal with all general health issues, but key areas tend to include maternal and child health, family planning and HIV and AIDS.

Most volunteers work with disadvantaged rural communities, so you'll need to be fit enough to travel large distances on rough roads. You may need to learn to ride a motorbike (VSO pays for training) before starting your job to reach all of the communities in a particular region or area.

What skills are required?
We're looking for nurses who have qualifications and valid credentials to practice in Canada, and at least 3 years' experience in some of the areas listed above. Training or mentoring experience is also considered beneficial for some placements.

What do we offer?
VSO offers a comprehensive package of training and support which covers the costs and expenses of being an overseas volunteer. This includes your VSO training, airfare and accommodation, medical costs, living allowances and grants at several stages of your volunteer journey, as well as support in resettling when you come home.

If you're thinking about joining VSO during a leave of absence, sabbatical or 4 over 5 option, and you possess the appropriate qualifications and experience for a VSO placement, our placement advisers will work with you around timelines and any documentation or support letters you require.
