Description: Lymphoma/Haematopathologist, BC Cancer Agency - Vancouver Centre

The BC Cancer Agency (BCCA) is committed to reducing the incidence of cancer, reducing the mortality from cancer, and improving the quality of life of those living with cancer. It provides a comprehensive cancer control program for the people of British Columbia by working with community partners to deliver a range of cancer services, including prevention, early detection, diagnosis and treatment, research, education, supportive care, rehabilitation and palliative care. It operates four regional cancer centres in the Fraser Valley, Kelowna, Vancouver and Vancouver Island, with a fifth centre opening in Abbotsford in summer 2008 and a sixth centre scheduled to open in Prince George in 2012. The BC Cancer Research Centre conducts research into the causes and cures for cancer.

The BCCA is one of several medical campuses of the University of British Columbia (UBC). All physicians at the BCCA are members of the UBC Medical Faculty and pathologists in the BCCA hold appointments in with the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at UBC. The BCCA pathology department conducts post-graduate Fellowship training programs in Cancer Genetics, Cytogenetics, Molecular Pathology, Haematopathology, Oncology and Cytopathology. Members of the BCCA pathology department contribute extensively to the scholarly activities of UBC. In 2007-2008, members of the department were engaged on 32 externally funded research projects. Departmental staff members hold sizable external grant support, particularly in the Lymphoma field.

Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine - BC Cancer Agency - Vancouver Centre

Lymphoma / Haematopathologist with expertise in Molecular Pathology

We are currently seeking to appoint a Haematopathologist with special interest and experience in Lymphoma Pathology in the PHSA Laboratory at the BC Cancer Agency. The successful applicant will enjoy academic status at the UBC and will join our world-renowned Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the BCCA and UBC. The Lymphoma Program at BCCA is the provincial referral laboratory in British Columbia for Lymphoma Pathology and has an international reputation for excellence. A comprehensive repertoire of immunohistochemistry and flow cytometric immunophenotyping (8 colour) is available to assist in the characterisation of Lymphoma. The successful applicant will participate fully in the Provincial Lymphoma Program, reporting and reviewing lymphoma diagnoses. Duties will include reporting in the full 8-colour flow cytometry service. The Lymphoma Program is strongly supported by our provincial Cancer Genetics Laboratory. In addition, the successful applicant will work with the Cancer Genetics Laboratory which provides standard bone marrow karyotyping and FISH analyses (fresh and formalin-fixed) for the investigation and follow-up of malignant lymphomas, acute and chronic leukaemias , myelodysplasias and myeloproliferative disorders. The spectrum of molecular genetic tests include B and T cell clonality studies, lymphoma and leukaemia specific translocation studies by PCR, RT-PCR and quantitative RT-PCR for diagnosis and residual disease detection, FLT3 gene duplication analysis for acute myeloid leukaemia, JAK2 mutation analysis for myeloproliferative disorders, PDGFR gene mutation analysis for myeloproliferative disorders, and chimerism studies pre- and post-bone marrow transplantation using DNA micro-satellite analysis.

Pathologists in the Lymphoma Program assist in undergraduate, post-graduate and Fellowship training in Haemato- and Lymphoma pathology. Participation in teaching technologists, residents, graduate students and medical students is required.

The successful applicant will have access to the state-of-the-art genomics core facility (Centre for Translational and Applied Genomics - CTAG), including expression profiling, high throughput sequencing, SNPs analysis, high resolution array CGH, and bioinformatics support. Collaborative research with basic scientists, oncologists, the pharmaceutical and the biotechnology industry are rapidly evolving and encouraged.

We are seeking a Lymphoma Pathologist with interest and experience in molecular pathology and with expertise and proven experience in predictive oncology and personalized therapy. Participation in translational research as a grant-funded principal investigator, presentations at national and international scientific meetings, and the regular publication of scholarly work in appropriate peer-reviewed journals would be expected. Your pre-eminent standing in the reporting of lymphoma using molecular techniques and knowledge to interact with the oncology and community is backed by eligibility for licensure with The College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia and Royal College certification in Pathology or equivalent qualification. With clinical and research training in Haematopathology and Oncologic Pathology at an internationally recognized cancer centre, coupled with eligibility for academic appointment in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at UBC, you are the perfect fit for this increasingly important mandate and will make a profound impact on the future of our organization.
