RIH is the state's largest general acute care hospital, the region's Level I Trauma Center, and the largest teaching hospital for The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Evaluates and diagnosis patient's communication and/or feeding/swallowing disorder by reviewing patient history, behavioral observations, and utilizing a variety of standardized tests and procedures. Makes recommendations for further diagnostic testing to determine appropriate community management such as whether or not to refer the patient to special education programs, early intervention programs, rehabilitation facilities, etc. Prepares report of findings indicating evaluation, diagnosis and prognosis; reviews transcribed report making corrections as necessary. Develops and establishes effective augmentative and alternative communication techniques and strategies, including selecting, prescribing, and dispensing of aids and devices and training individuals, their families, and other communication partners in their use. Selects, fits, and establishes effective use of appropriate prosthetic/adaptive devices for speaking and swallowing (e.g. electrolarynges, speaking valves.). Uses instrumental technology to diagnose and treat disorders of communication and swallowing (e.g. videofluoroscopy). Conducts pure-tone air conduction hearing screening for the purpose of the initial identification and/or referral of individuals with other communication disorders or possible middle ear pathology. Counsels/educates patients and family members concerning results of evaluation and types of treatment available, trains and supports family members and other communication partners of individuals with speech, voice, language, communication and swallowing disabilities. Develops therapy plan designed to meet individual needs of patient and arranges schedule of patient's therapy. Conducts therapy individually or in group situations according to prepared plans and continually evaluates patient's progress and makes necessary revisions to therapy plans in order to meet needs of individual patients. Maintains records of patients seen, therapy progress notes, charges, etc., for billing and statistical purposes. Provides aural rehabilitation and related counseling services to individual with hearing loss and to their families. Enhances speech and language proficiency and communication effectiveness, including but not limited to accent reduction, collaboration with teachers of English as a second language, and improvement of voice, performance, and singing. Collaborates in the assessment of central auditory processing disorders in cases in which there is evidence of speech, language, and/or other cognitive-communication disorders; provides intervention for individuals with central auditory processing disorders. Measures outcomes of treatment and conducts continuous evaluation of the effectiveness of practice and programs to improve and maintain quality of services. Maintains documentation for Performance/Quality practices and programs. Provides speech pathology consultation to physician's, rehabilitation personnel, and other professionals to direct and coordinate patient's plan of care, and provides teaching/in-service/lectures to other hospital departments or outside agencies/schools. Develops, submits for approval and provides speech/language therapy services outside the Hospital such as services for children in a local Head Start Program, school system, or other Lifespan affiliates such as Visiting Nurse Association. Requirements: Master's Degree in Speech Pathology from an accredited university. State License issued by the Rhode Island Department of Health, or Provisional Rhode Island State License for Clinical Fellows involved in supervised clinical fellowship year. Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).
