Position Summary Purpose: To practice in and advanced role to provide health maintenance for well newborns and infants, episodic care for ill infants, and comprehensive care for newborns and infants with chronic conditions. The Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) works under the supervision of the medical staff and works collaboratively with other members of the health care team. Practicing under established guidelines, the NNP assumes independent and interdependent responsibilities in the assessment,, diagnosis and initiation of treatment and procedures. Job duties are performed in a manner that is developmentally appropriate for the ages of patients served. As an advanced practice nurse, the NNP is involved in transport, education, consultation, research and evaluation of clinical practice at various levels. Knowledge and Skills: Required for completely satisfactory performance in this job is a broad based knowledge of nursing functions and medical terminology and a broad knowledge of learning principles and how to apply these principles to teaching. Knowledge base must include neonatal specific nursing principles and pathophysiology. Also required is the ability to operate a variety of equipment and perform routine and special procedures used in the daily advanced nursing care of newborns and infants, the ability to work effectively with others, and the ability to demonstrate leadership qualities. Specialty skills include: umbilical vessel catheter placement, needle aspiration of pnuemothorax, arterial blood puncture, bladder tap, lumbar puncture, intubation, and *PICC placement.(*Only NNP?s checked off to place PICC) Formal Education, License, and Experience: The formal education normally associated with completely satisfactory performance in this job is a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing required (Master of Science in Nursing preferred), Current license to practice professional nursing in the State of Texas (required), Recognition by the Board of Nurse Examiners as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner required, and One year minimum neonatal nursing experience preferred.
