The mission of the Kenneth B. Schwartz Center, an independent non-profit organization housed at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, is to promote compassionate health care by strengthening the relationship between patients and caregivers. The Center is growing quickly and gaining national recognition and respect in the health care world. While it primarily provides education, training and support for clinical caregivers, it also helps patients and their families communicate effectively with their health care providers. Its largest and fastest growing program, the Schwartz Center Rounds, are now in 145 sites in 28 states across the country and expanding rapidly to new sites. The Rounds are a multidisciplinary forum where caregivers discuss difficult emotional and social issues that arise in patient care. The Center has completed a quantitative and qualitative evaluation, conducted by an outside firm, which documents the positive impact of the Rounds on caregivers and their institutions. In addition, the Center recently developed two programs that focus more directly on patients and families. The Schwartz Center recently completed a business plan which called for the hiring of a Clinical Director to help expand the organization nationally while furthering the quality and integrity of its existing programs and creating new programs. Currently, the organization is totally dependent on philanthropy but one of the responsibilities of the Clinical Director will be to create revenue-producing activities for the Center. This position is a unique opportunity for a physician who believes in the organization's mission, has expertise in relationship-centered care, and wants to work part-time while potentially retaining a part-time clinical practice, teaching or research position. POSITION DESCRIPTION The ideal candidate is a physician who personifies the values of compassionate care and is a respected and credible leader with vision, passion and a strong commitment to the Centers mission and work. He/she will work part-time initially, and will most likely expand to full time by the third year. The Clinical Director will be responsible for broadening the Centers visibility, influence and impact and partnering with staff to expand and enhance all of the Centers programs and initiatives. As the only clinician on the staff, he/she will add subject matter expertise and will serve as the content expert for the Schwartz Center. He/ she will focus on constant quality improvement for all Schwartz Center programs, with the goal of making them an integral part of the heath care culture, and mining them for general principles of compassionate care leading to additional teaching materials and conferences. The Clinical Director will also be responsible for developing new and innovative programs, including programs that directly involve patients and families in improving communication with caregivers. He/she will report to the Centers Executive Director and may be eligible for a clinical faculty appointment at Massachusetts General Hospital. RESPONSIBILITIES: Establish meaningful partnerships with state/national organizations, such as the Joint Commission, NCI, Institute for Healthcare Improvement, CMS, AHRQ, ACGME, Nursing Magnet, etc. Present at conferences and publish articles on the work of the Center. Partner with program staff to enhance the value of Schwartz Center Rounds to institutions. o Work with sites to engage senior leadership and make the Rounds integral to patient safety and quality. o Work with sites to mine the Rounds for general principles and other teaching materials. o Establish a partnership board of Rounds leaders to provide strategic direction for the expansion of the Rounds. Work with staff to create new and innovative programs as warranted to further the Centers mission. Develop teaching materials for medical professional education. Help create revenue-producing opportunities for the Center, including developing and hosting a national Schwartz Center conference by year three Serve as a liaison and/or collaborator with other organizations and investigators researching the positive patient satisfaction and health care outcomes associated with compassionate care. Become recognized as a spokesperson for compassionate care; becoming the go to person for journalists, media, conference planners, etc. Work with development staff to seek sponsors for funding, particularly from national foundations (eg, Robert Wood Johnson, etc.).
