Description:
Trinity - Responsible for assessment, planning,
implementation and evaluation of direct and indirect
patient care delivery in an assigned unit or units.
Interviews, hires, and orients, and as necessary, disciplines and recommends termination of unit personnel utilizing established Human Resources policies and procedures. Collaborates with Director in resolving Human Resource issues. -Assesses, plans, develops and implements appropriate staffing patterns and patient assessments for the unit which meet continuity of care and patient acuity level needs on a 24 hour a day basis. -Supervises and evaluates work performance in terms of patient care, staff relations, and efficiency of service through observation, spot checking, conferences, and related unit/patient documentation. Consults with Director and/or Administration Shift Supervisor as necessary. -Conducts 6 month, annual, transfer performance appraisals for unit staff. Participates in the formulation and revisions of position descriptions and performance appraisals. -Counsels employees on work-related behaviors as necessary, takes appropriate disciplinary action up to and including discharge. Collaborates with Director and Human Resources to assure compliance to policies and procedures. -Provides for professional growth and development of nursing staff through identification of learning needs, providing support/time for educational programs, and encouraging education (formal and continuing) efforts. -Provides for initial and ongoing orientation of new personnel to job requirements, equipment, policies and procedures, etc. -Exhibits management/leadership behaviors conductive to the enhancement of staff morale, a service orientation, and a productive work environment. -Conducts planned staff meetings (per standard) that include discussion of patient care standards, performance improvement, new information, patient care problems, etc., and provide for unit problem solving. Operational Management -Develops, in collaboration with the unit staff and Director, objectives for the unit. -Interprets and follows lines of authority and communication formulated by the hospital and the Department of Nursing. -Promotes good interpersonal relationships and open communication inter/ interdepartmentally. Participates in and supports the coordinates of patient care activities with the interdisciplinary team to ensure quality patient care. -Maintains a safe, comfortable environment for patients, staff and visitors and ensures all patient care is provided in accordance with Hospital and other regulatory requirements to include: JCAHO, OSHA, State, Federal, Infection Control, Safety, etc. -Provides leadership and direction, interprets and follows established Hospital and Nursing Departmental philosophy, goals, objectives, policies, and procedures for all personnel, patients and the public. Acts as a role model. Assumes responsibility for the daily report for all nursing units as needed. -Obtains input from the Staff and collaborates with the Director in developing, monitoring, justifying, and maintaining a budget for the patient care unit. Evaluates the needs for new/different supplies/equipment. Ensures the availability of all resources required for the effective and efficient operation of the department. -Attends required meetings (supervisory, administrative, etc.) to discuss departmental operation, staff training needs and patient care problem areas, and to formulate programs, policies, procedures, etc., to improve these areas. -Participates in and supports performance improvement and research programs and activities. -Cooperates with clinical instructors in planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing/allied health students' clinical experiences. Patient Care Management -Provides input in the formulation and revision of patient care policies and procedures. -Works with the medical staff to coordinate medical and nursing management of patient care. -Evaluates patient care through assessment, planning, intervention, evaluation, written documentation, observation and comparison to established standards. -Administers nursing care to patients, as needed, to maintain clinical skills, to assess patient requirements, or as a resource to staff nurses. -Serves as a Clinical resource person and assists nursing personnel in assessing patient/family status to plan nursing care, patient/family education, discharge planning, etc... -Makes rounds routinely to observe patient care activities. -Investigates and responds to complaints from all customer groups. Reports pertinent information to the Director, Risk Management and others as appropriate.
