Performs a variety of duties in the operating room, primarily rotating from room to room scrubbing assigned cases. Collaborates with other surgical team members in providing the best possible surgical treatment to the individual patient. Functions as a member of the sterile team, establishing and maintaining a sterile field, identifying and correcting breaks in sterile technique, and passing instruments, equipment and supplies. May act as an assistant specialty coordinator and/or perform duties as a preceptor to student surgical technicians and to nurses enrolled in the perioperative nurse program. May be utilized as a resource for procurement and evaluation of new operating room equipment.

Communicates pertinent information to the circulating nurse, anesthesiologist, and surgeon pertaining to the patient, i.e., amounts of local anesthesia given, amounts of irrigation used. Assists the circulating nurse when not scrubbed. Assists as a first assist when the Physician Assistant is not available. May perform wound closure for Wound Closure Conference and must obtain certification to perform such duties prior to performing them. Certified, trained and experienced in open heart team surgery operations. Must be approved through the appropriate Director of Perioperative Surgery.

Minimum Education: High School Diploma or equivalent, Post High School Vocational/Specialized Training, Certification in Surgical Technology to Include Balloon Angioplasty Equipment.

Minimum Experience: At least 2 years or graduate of Accredited School of Surgical Technology. Certification as a Surgical Technologist (CST); Basic Life Support (BLS).
