Job Responsibilities: Reporting to the Director, Health Information Management Systems, the Medical Records Coder will be responsible for interpreting a wide variety of clinical and diagnostic documentation, to include most complex medical treatments, identifying diagnoses, complications, co-morbidities, and procedures for episodes of inpatient care. Also responsible for assigning appropriate ICD-9-CM and/or CPT-4 codes according to Coding Clinic Official Coding Guidelines and DRG (Diagnostic Related Group) to each coded inpatient account to obtain optimal hospital reimbursement. Work with physicians on coding to provide ongoing education to physicians on coding and documentation requirements. Provide feedback to physicians on one to one basis on the need for complete documentation in the medical record, to assure fair reimbursement for treatment of patient conditions. Reinforce the need to safeguard the privacy of health information in the medical record. Attend meetings and educational conferences, assuring personal responsibility for professional development and ongoing education to maintain proficiency. Adhere to and enlarges upon coding policies and procedures in accordance with AHIMA's code of Ethical Conduct and AHIMA's Standards of Ethical Coding. Requirements: High school diploma or equivalent is required. Must have extensive knowledge of ICD-9-CM diagnosis and procedure coding with 3 - 5 years inpatient coding experience. Knowledge of coding principles, conventions and RHIA/RHIT/CCS certification required. Knowledge of DRG Grouper software and ability to organize/prioritize workload to meet strict deadlines also required. Must be flexible and a team player. jobs@hrca.harvard.edu Posting
