JOB SUMMARY Implements patient care services for patients with speech, language, fluency, voice, swallowing and cognitive disorders. Communicates knowledge and information to the patient, family, and other health professionals. Participates as a member of a multi-disciplinary team. Represents profession within the facility and the community. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES Administers appropriate speech/language/cognitive treatments that are based upon evaluative findings. Provides screening, identification, assessment, diagnosis, treatment, intervention, and follow up services for people with speech and language disorders. Utilizes standardized or non-standardized diagnostic tests, and performs appropriate interpretations of test results. Evaluates and assesses status of referred clients with particular attention to receptive and expressive language skills, speech fluency, vocal and oral motor competence, articulation and auditory skills. Evaluation and treatment are designed with consideration of age-specific needs of each patient. Assessments demonstrate clinical judgment based on data gathered during the exam. Components include: objective measures; support problem areas specific to the objective findings; demonstrates measurable, time referenced short and long term goals; documents functional long term goals. Appropriately uses instrumental technology to diagnose and treat disorders of communication and swallowing. Works with the radiology department to complete appropriate video fluoroscopic swallowing studies. Patient teaching and education is ongoing and begins at onset of care. Teaching includes patients, family members, and care givers. Incorporates verbal instructions and demonstration as needed. Provides the patient with written home exercise programs. Treatment-Discharge Planning: Initiates and manages discharge planning beginning at the first visit and is managed throughout the patient's treatment. Regularly communicates with referring physician. Documentation includes appropriate patient information following department specific guidelines. Maintains timely and accurate patient records and reports. Documentation is legible, accurate and clear. Competently conducts hearing screening for the purpose of the initial identification and/or referral of individuals with other communication disorders or possible middle ear pathology. Demonstrates organizational and time management skills necessary to carry out multiple treatment plans on a daily basis. Demonstrates interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with customers, peers, and other staff. Participates in clinical supervision of Speech Pathology students (depending upon experience. Must have at least one year of clinical experience prior to supervision of full time students). Performs other job related duties as assigned. JOB SPECIFICATIONS Education / Experience Requirements Required: Masters Degree in Speech Pathology or Special Education/Speech Pathology from an accredited college or university A valid Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) from the American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA) or preparing to file a Clinical Fellowship Year Plan with ASHA Completion of all requirements for CCC within one year of employment. If less than full-time, completion of the CFY will take place in a corresponding amount of time as established by the ASHA Position Specific Expectations Deals with highly confidential patient information. Ability to effective communicate and present self to people in a courteous, tactful and poised manner. Exhibits flexibility in schedule in response to typical clinical and/or patient changes, including the ability to cope in an appropriate manner to common patient and clinically related stressful situations. Participates in Hospital and/or departmental quality assessment and continuous quality improvement activities as directed; through identification of quality improvement opportunities, goal setting, collection and evaluation of data, implementation of action plans, or related applications. Demonstrates the minimum knowledge, skills, and abilities in age-specific categories being served: infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, geriatric.
