The program uses kiosk technology to provide access to diabetes education to the public. HEC, which is supported with funding obtained by Congressman Murtha through the Department of Defense, features 13 kiosks placed throughout Cambria and Somerset counties. In addition to the Senior Activities Center, locations include MMC's ER, the Conemaugh Diabetes Institute at MMC's Lee Campus, WMC, Miners and Meyersdale medical centers. These kiosks offer diabetes risk assessments, health-related tools and interactive education modules. Nearly 21 million people in the U.S. suffer from diabetes, with one million of them residing in Pennsylvania. One of the goals of HEC is to use kiosk technology to educate the public on the risk factors of diabetes. HEC is also being tested at locations throughout Fort Jackson Army Base in South Carolina.
