Diabetes education right at your fingertips
Congressman John P. Murtha joined leaders from Memorial Medical Center, The InforMedx Group and the Conemaugh Diabetes Institute to introduce the Health E Control (HEC) program. The program uses kiosk technology to provide access to diabetes education to the public.

HEC, which is supported with funding obtained by Congressman Murtha through the Department of Defense, features 13 kiosks placed throughout Cambria and Somerset counties. In addition to the Senior Activities Center, locations include MMC's ER, the Conemaugh Diabetes Institute at MMC's Lee Campus, WMC, Miners and Meyersdale medical centers.

These kiosks offer diabetes risk assessments, health-related tools and interactive education modules. Nearly 21 million people in the U.S. suffer from diabetes, with one million of them residing in Pennsylvania.

One of the goals of HEC is to use kiosk technology to educate the public on the risk factors of diabetes.

HEC is also being tested at locations throughout Fort Jackson Army Base in South Carolina.

Three main categories of education and support are offered:
Diabetes Self Management Education Classes
This group program is for those who have been recently diagnosed with diabetes or those with diabetes who need up-to-date information to on how to manage their diabetes.
The program is led by a Certified Diabetes Educator and Registered Dietitian, and features easy-to-understand information about diabetes, nutrition, blood sugar monitoring, medications and exercise. Classes meet monthly and are held during the day or evening - making it convenient and accessible. Classes are held at the Institute, located on the first floor on the Lee Campus of Memorial Medical Center, 320 Main Street, Johnstown.

A physician's order is required to participate. While most insurance plans cover program costs, it's best to check with your provider before classes begin.

One-to-One Education
Individuals, including pregnant women with diabetes or those who have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes, can meet one-on-one with a Certified Diabetes Educator and/or Registered Dietitian to learn more about:
• Meal planning
• Blood glucose monitoring
• Pump training
• Insulin instruction
A physician's order is required. While most insurance plans cover program costs, it's best to check with your provider before classes begin.

Lifestyle Balance Program
This free 12-week program teaches people how to balance food and exercise to lose weight, helping to prevent or delay the onset of diabetes. Instructors provide tips and guidelines to help participants make healthy food choices and physical exercise a part of daily life. They also provide support to keep participants on track to prevent diabetes.
