Job Details: Senior Technologist

Description: HOURS: Rotating Shifts
As an integral member of the Clinical Lab Services front line leadership team and under the direction of the Manager or delegate, the Senior Technologist in will be responsible for the development and evaluation of new tests under guidance; train staff, coordinate daily workload, provides technical guidance and supervision to assigned staff.

Acts as a technical specialist and a resource in the assigned discipline. Responsible for efficient uses of resources and ensures smooth operation of own department.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Act as a Technical Specialist for the applicable discipline(s):
• Provides technical, procedural and theoretical guidance to assigned technical staff.
• Acts as an administrative resource to ensure areas run efficiently and effectively.
• Provides direction and coaches staff in day-to-day activities, ensuring work is complete, accurate and reported.
• Monitors workflow and ensures equitable distribution of workload.
• Ensures adequate supplies are available to complete the necessary workload.
Performs molecular diagnostic testing bench work and participates in shift work as required:
• Performs routine molecular diagnostic testing.
• Performs routine and advanced testing procedures.
Problem Solving and Decision Making:
• Develops and maintains strong problem solving skills as applied to procedures and instrumentation
• Pursues and promotes the use of innovative technologies.
• Overcomes resistance/obstacles in working toward resolutions or results.
• Identifies and investigates problems, determines root causes, develops and implements strategies for improvement/solving problems both internally and externally.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
• Graduate of accredited Medical Laboratory Technology Program and must possess active and current registration with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO) in Microbiology with endorsement in Virology and/or current CMLTO registration in Molecular Genetics.
• Advanced Registered Technologists (ART), Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Scientists (CSMLS) or equivalent Bachelor Degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences (BMLSc).
• Graduate Diploma, Genetics Technology Diploma Program or University degree in relevant disciplines.
• Five years recent experience in Molecular Microbiology and/or Molecular Genetics.
• Demonstrated expert level technical skills in microbiology and/or molecular biology.
• Proven troubleshooting, maintenance and repair skills in instruments used in the field.
• 1 year supervisory experience in a medical lab environment in the last 3 years preferred.
• Demonstrated excellence in method development, research, problem solving and project management skills.
• Advanced knowledge and experience in method validation and regulatory requirements.
• Ability to interpret and apply new information from scientific literature relevant to molecular biology, microbiology and virology.
• In-depth knowledge of Quality Control and Quality Assurance.
• In-depth knowledge of computer systems, i.e., LIS and MS Office software.
• Demonstrated knowledge of quality management, financial and inventory management and continuous quality improvement.
• Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Ontario Laboratory Accreditation (OLA) and other regulatory requirements.
• Demonstrated teaching and coaching skills.
• Proven ability to work independently; exercises initiatives for continuous improvement.
• Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks.
• Proven excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong team building skills, ability to motivate staff, and embrace change.
• Proven ability to attend work on a regular basis
