Alaska Native Medical Center is a 150-bed level II trauma center located in Anchorage. The medical complex is the referral center for more than 130,000 Native Alaska and American Indian people living in cities and villages throughout the State. The Emergency Department has more than 56,000 annual visits and a full time Hospitalist program provides coverage for both adult and pediatric inpatients...Anchorage with a population of 285,000 is the largest city in Alaska . The City is a major port, a railroad hub, and the worlds third busiest cargo airport. Other industries include tourism, commercial fishing, the mineral and mining industry, two local military bases, and a growing energy business sector. The air is clean, the water is clean, and the mountains are breathtaking and beautiful. Alaska is a pristine and vast outdoor paradise. For the sportsman and hobbyist there is fabulous fishing, hunting, trekking, biking on more than 70 miles of trails, Alpine skiing, Mt. climbing, hockey, golf, softball, outdoor photography kayaking and more. The local arts community offers an orchestra, choir, museums, theater groups, and visiting artists and performers. Anchorage has shopping malls, boutiques, local Native craft and clothing stores, and a large number of excellent restaurants. Anchorage is protected by the Chugach Mountains and warmed by Japanese currents of the Pacific Ocean. The climate is actually quite mild year-round. Spring through fall, Anchorages climate is similar to San Franciscos spring weather, with temperatures that can reach into the 70s. Summer highs average 65 degrees. Winters bring on the snow with high temperatures dipping into the 20s, creating a climate very much like ski resorts in the Rocky Mountains, Canada or Europe. About Our PhysiciansThe physicians at ANMC share a strong common commitment to caring for an underserved population. There are 130,000 Alaska Indians and Native people in the State living in the cities and in 256 villages. The Medical Staff is cohesive, unpretentious, down to earth and well trained. Physicians at ANMC practice without being controlled by the business of medicine. Cost is a consideration but it does not drive the quality of level of care. ANMC physicians are highly independent but work as a team with colleagues, nursing and staff. Everyone at ANMC feels that they are doing important work that is appreciated, and that the work that they do makes a difference.Pulmonology Critical CareThe pulmonary critical care practice is busy, interesting, and never boring. The ideal candidate has strong communication skills, is hard working and is a team player. The practice serves a diverse patient population with lung transplants, connective tissue disease, COPD, asthma, unusual infections, and HIV referrals. There is a weekly tumor board and quarterly city wide chest conference. Additionally there are multidisciplinary rounds Monday through Friday (not Wednesday) in the critical care unit. At this time nights are covered by the hospitalists and the group is on consult.There is a 16-bed mixed medical and surgical ICU at the only designated level II trauma center in Alaska. Each physician rotates through the ICU for 14 days, has 4 days off, followed by one week Pulmonary Clinic. Future plans to expand the service may include a sleep clinic. The group manages medical patients with protocols that follow evidence based medicine. Procedures include chest tubes, intubations, central lines, all ventilator management, options to do EGDs, and perc.trachs.
