The Department of Emergency Medicine (DEM) at John Peter Smith Health Network (JPS) is a leader in Emergency Medicine in the DFW Metroplex, serving at least one third of the 6 million persons living in the 12 counties which make up the DFW Metroplex. We are the only Emergency Department in Tarrant County where every attending physician is Board Certified in Emergency Medicine. JPS was the first designated Level II Trauma Center in Tarrant County, regional neurosurgery referral center, and JPS is currently pursuing Level 1 Trauma Center designation. JPS is a Fully Accredited Chest Pain Center with PCI capabilities by the Society for Chest Pain Centers, and is also one of only three JCAHO Certified Stroke Centers in the DFW Metroplex. The JPS DEM cares for more than 72,000 patients annually, and it consists of 65 main treatment beds with the ability to expand as necessary to meet volume needs. There are 72 hours of physician coverage daily (shifts vary in length from 8-12 hours, with some triple and even quadruple coverage). Designated Fast Track staffed 16 hours per day. JPS also offers the Center for Cancer Care, Trinity Springs Psychiatric Pavilion with its own designated psychiatric emergency center, and Health Center for Women with its own OB Triage center. SANE Program for the county and more than 50 surrounding local law enforcement agencies. With the recent completion of a new 5-story tower, with a total of 220,000 square feet, the JPS campus will include more than 100 new inpatient beds, new surgical suites and a new 45,000 square foot emergency department and trauma center with capacity for 85,000 annual visits (Up to 90-beds with 36 treatment spaces for acute care, 8 treatment spaces for trauma, 12 treatment spaces for non-urgent care, an imaging area with 16-slice helical CT, and 8 ambulance bays). There is a heavy emphasis on resident and student teaching. The DEM has enjoyed full departmental status for many years, and hospital funding for GME application and support for an Emergency Medicine Residency is available now, with an anticipated start up of the residency program as soon as the summer of 2009. An experienced Emergency Medicine Residency Program Director as well as a DEM Director of Research are already in place. A Toxicology Consultation Service with two Board Certified Toxicologists is planned for the 2009 academic year. Intramural funds are available for research, and JPS has recently established an intramural Research Department. With a proposed range of 10-14 residents per year, there is a need for both academic core teaching-faculty as well as clinical-faculty. Academic affiliations with the University of Texas Southwestern and the University of North Texas are currently under negotiations. Come be a part of the exciting team!
