The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) works with patients/families, staff and systems to achieve quality, cost-effective, patient-focused outcomes within a specialty area. Focus areas are clinical practice, teaching, research and consulting. 1. Designs, implements and evaluates innovative individual and/or population-based programs of care to achieve desired evidence-based, quality, cost-effective, nurse-sensitive outcomes. Uses knowledge of differential illness, diagnoses and treatments in comprehensive, holistic assessments of patients. May perform patient teaching and case management. 2. Serves as leader/consultant/mentor/change agent in advancing the practice of nursing among other nurses across the organization, using innovative evidence-based interventions, best-practice guidelines, and modification of professional standards and organizational policies that direct the care of nursing personnel and other providers of healthcare to improve outcomes. Promotes and participates in nursing research. Demonstrates engagement in specialty by participating in local and national professional organizations. 3. Leads multidisciplinary groups to facilitate collaboration with other disciplines in the attainment of outcomes across the continuum of care. 4. Interprets the dimensions of nursing care requiring resources at the system level, providing leadership to ensure that the system adequately supports the delivery of nursing care. Works with Nursing leadership to ensure competency of staff. 5. Demonstrates professional citizenship and fiscal responsibility in the healthcare system by focusing on health policy and/or resource management to ensure quality, cost-effective outcomes of nursing care. 6. Experience in behavioral management & or substance-abuse/chemical dependence is desirable. 7. Certification in a specialty area (e.g., Emergency, Med-Surg, Critical Care Nursing) is desirable. Masters degree in Nursing. Licensure to practice as an RN in Washington state. At least 5 years experience in a clinical nursing capacity required; 2 years of experience in Emergency Medicine preferred with focus on evidence-based practice development, patient risk identification, and adverse outcome prevention strategies. Expert assessment, intervention and evaluation skills. Skill in utilizing evidence to develop, teach, guide and implement best practices, professional standards, and organization policies within a defined clinical specialty. Skill in engaging in interactive consultation to aid in shaping practice and improve the quality and comprehensiveness of care. Skill in using computerized information systems to support advanced nursing process decisions with an understanding of scientific methodologies to evaluate outcomes. Strong skills as a communicator and educator who can use disciplined inquiry/research and ethical reasoning to make decisions, describe reality and anticipate the future accurately. Ability to recognize what is working well, what needs to be fixed, and what interventions best predict the achievement of quality, cost-effective patient care and outcomes. Ability to self-reflect and receive feedback on strengths and weaknesses with an openness for continued learning and personal growth.
