Located on the eastern shores of San
Francisco Bay in scenic Alameda County,
the city of Hayward takes its name
from William Hayward, a shoe factory
worker from New England who came to
California looking for gold in the
19th century. Hayward built the city's
first resort hotel, and later became
Road Commissioner for Alameda County.
