Terre Haute, whose name is from the
French for "high land," is set along
the eastern bank of the Wabash River
in western Indiana.
The community began as a village in
the early 1800s, and has been a city
since 1853. Terre Haute is located
in Vigo
County, 77 miles (124 kilometers)
southwest of Indianapolis.
