They spend most of their time in research, in addition to caring for patients and may become faculty members at medical schools, universities and research institutes.

According to Patt Peterson, director of education at the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA),  you have two choices: Either get a master’s degree in health information management (or health informatics) which prepares you to sit for your RHIA credential, or, if you aren’t interested in pursuing a master’s degree, then you have two certificate options.

Check out the Web site of the American Society of Radiologic Technologists, www.asrt.org. It has a career section that talks about salaries and specialties in the field. With experience, you can move up into supervisory roles. You may also want to become proficient and licensed in other modalities, such as mammography, CT or MRI – that will boost your earning power. Training is usually on the job, although ultrasound may require additional schooling.
