DEPARTMENT: Clinical Education SCHEDULE: Full-time, regular; 40hrs/week; SHIFT: Day; Monday through Friday 7:00am to 4:00pm EDUCATION: Bachelors degree or equivalent experience in nursing education required. Masters degree strongly preferred. Current California RN license required. POSITION SUMMARY: Responsible for clinical education and training programs to meet the learning and developmental needs of the clinical staff. Designs, implements, and evaluates strategies to maintain clinical competency of care providers. QUALIFICATIONS: Previous recent experience in in-service education in clinical service area required (usually two to five years). Previous teaching experience required and CPR instructor preferred. Adult learning knowledge required. Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills and group facilitator process skills. Must possess a thorough knowledge of the California Nurse Practice Act, The Joint Commission, Title 22, QA, BRN regulations. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Three to five years experience in perinatal nursing with demonstrated clinical expertise in area of specialty. Two years of experience as a perinatal clinical nurse educator. Masters degree in nursing strongly preferred. AWHONN Fetal Heart Monitoring Instructor preferred, NRP instructor preferred. REQUIRED SKILLS TESTING: Fetal Heart Monitoring Test DUTIES: Designs, implements, and evaluates programs that meet learning and competency development needs of clinical staff. Responds quickly to corporate changes in clinical practice and provides training required. Insures compliance and documentation of educational programs based on regulatory agency standards. Develops, implements, monitors, and evaluates effectiveness of orientation/training/cross-training programs that are based on an assessment of individual skills and evaluated by clinical competency outcome criteria. Collaborates with leadership to improve quality and efficiency throughout the continuum of clinical care. Conducts research into professional and community practice standards, technology, and clinical innovations for improved service within assigned care area. Makes recommendations for cost/quality strategies; works within budget. Communicates and markets educational programs to broad target audience using appropriate methods. PREFERRED DUTIES: The perinatal clinical nurse educator possesses knowledge and an in-depth experience in the care of perinatal patients. Primary responsibilities include designing, implementing and evaluating programs that meet the learning and development needs of the perinatal nursing staff. Develops, implements, monitors, and evaluates effectiveness of orientation/training/ cross training programs for perinatal staff. Participates in the development of care standards and makes recommendations for changes in area of perinatal clinical practice. Collaborates with nursing staff in assessing patient, family age-specific nursing needs and helps develop plan of care for the complex, high-risk perinatal patient. Evaluates the effectiveness of the care provided. Designs teaching programs for patients/families and provides assistance to nursing staff in program implementation. Develops interdisciplinary plans of care for complex and high risk patients. In conjunction with members of the health care team, assesses staff knowledge and identifies competency-based education needs of staff. Introduces new techniques/innovation as appropriate to the perinatal department. Provides consultation to physicians, nurses and other health care providers in meeting care needs of individual or groups of patients in both inpatient and outpatient care settings. Defines and implements best nursing practices. Provides input into evaluations regarding clinical competence. Collaborates with leadership to improve quality and efficiency throughout the continuum of clinical care. Reviews and updates policies and procedures, performance standards and clinical competencies. Coordinates programs to keep staff up to date on new equipment and techniques. Assists with programs on mandatory topics (i.e. fire safety, workplace safety, infection control practices, etc.) Participates in community based programs that are pertinent to the perinatal patient. Facilitates nursing student experience in clinical area. May serve as a preceptor to graduate healthcare students. Participates in PCS orientation. Collaborates with other team members of the Clinical Education Department to meet the educational needs of nursing staff.
